Hanimaadhoo Council held discussions with the women of the island on promoting greater interest in Bashi, a traditional Maldivian cultural sport, and on preserving, revitalising, and promoting traditional Maldivian sports. The meeting marked an important and positive step towards strengthening community participation in preserving the island’s cultural heritage.

Meetings of this nature help strengthen social connections within the community, increase women’s participation, and create opportunities to preserve and pass traditional Maldivian sports on to future generations.
Important Areas for Discussion
Organizing Bashi Competitions:
Organize Bashi competitions at island or atoll level.
Conduct special sporting activities in connection with Eid and national celebrations.
Training for Women and Children:
Conduct special training classes or “Bashi Clinics” for young women and children who are unfamiliar with the sport.
Involve experienced senior players to teach participants the rules, techniques, and skills of the game.
Developing Facilities and a Bashi Court:
Identify a suitable area and establish a proper Bashi court, including adequate lighting for evening activities.
Seek the Council’s support in providing the equipment required for playing Bashi, such as balls and rackets.
Promoting Other Traditional Maldivian Sports:
In addition to Bashi, work towards reviving and promoting other traditional Maldivian sports and cultural games, including Maali Nerun, Kandikuli, and Faiga Thalaa, as well as other traditional sports practised by women.
